Step by step

Explore a freshwater habitat together

Follow these simple steps to guide young learners through a local creek or river, one small discovery at a time.

1. Look closely

Walk to a safe creek edge with children and watch quietly for ripples, moving lillies or tracks in the mud.

2. Notice the homes

Talk about the plants, rocks and water that give freshwater animals food, shelter and a safe place to live.

3. Give wildlife room

Remind children that wild animals stay wild. We observe from a distance and leave every creature undisturbed.

After each visit, invite children to draw what they noticed and share one way they can protect their local waterway.
